Skin Tags (sometimes called skin tabs) are small, harmless, benign
(noncancerous) skin growths that appear as flaps of skin that often
narrow at their base in the form of a stalk. They are one of the most
common skin growths on adults and it is possible for a person to have
anywhere from one to hundreds of skin tags. Almost everyone at some
point in their life will develop at least one skin tag. While they can
appear on both males and females with equal frequency, they are more
common on individuals who are middle-aged and obese.
Some studies suggest that there is a genetic predisposition to skin
tag development and can therefore run in families. It is also common
for those with Crohn’s disease to develop skin tags around the anal
opening (perianal skin tags). Hormonal changes in pregnant women can
also stimulate skin tag growth, especially during the second trimester
of pregnancy. People who are prone to diabetes and have a skin
condition called acanthosis nigricans often have skin tags.
Skin tags are generally painless unless they become twisted,
irritated or inflamed, at which point removal sometimes becomes a
necessity.
